When it comes to the increasingly progressive electric vehicle market, clever, relevant and standout innovation is needed to drive the sector forward. That’s why BYD has developed the industry-leading Blade Battery system, designed to offer new levels of safety, durability and performance as well as increased battery space utilisation. Launched in 2020 as a major innovation in the EV sector, the Blade Battery offers the range, longevity and power you’d expect from market-leading EV battery technology pioneers.
Years of research and development has resulted in improved electric vehicle safety. Rigorous studies and testing by BYD proved the use of lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) as a cathode material to be much safer than conventional lithium-ion, thereby enhancing EV vehicle development significantly. LFP is highly durable, offers excellent thermal stability and is substantially cobalt free which is great for the environment.
BYD’s innovation resulted in the Blade Battery exceeding the requirements of the Nail Penetration test which simulates a serious road traffic accident. During the test, the Blade Battery gave off no smoke or fire and did not exceed surface temperatures of over 60 degrees centigrade. Traditional batteries, on the other hand, reached temperatures of up to 400 degrees in similar testing environments. The Battery also withstood a series of other extreme tests including being crushed, bent, heated and overloaded by 260%. No test resulted in a fire or explosion, confirming the Blade Battery’s place in the safety-conscious EV market.
Unsatisfied with conventional EV battery technology and design, BYD pushed limits and embraced innovation to improve space efficiency. With the knowledge that only 40 percent of a typical auto battery pack’s space is dedicated to the energy-storing battery cells themselves (the rest going to structural elements), BYD strived to do something better.
EV battery technology specialists developed blade-like cells stacked closely together to form structural integrity, thereby eliminating the need for modules and support beams. The Blade Battery construction thereby increases space utilisation by 50 percent, so that 60 percent of the battery pack is now dedicated to energy storage.
The Blade Battery is capable of hugely extended electric ranges due to its unique design. More batteries can fit into a small space resulting in improved practicality and efficiency. While a conventional EV battery might deliver 249 miles of electric range, a Blade Battery of the same size can deliver 373 miles of driving range.
One of the major concerns in the EV sector is battery safety, with high pressure and high temperatures causing thermal runway (an uncontrollable heating state) in a lithium-ion cell. As NMC cells found in lithium-ion batteries release oxygen as a byproduct during thermal runway, they tend to catch fire quickly. In comparison, LFP cells do not produce oxygen as a byproduct, significantly reducing fire concerns and improving electric vehicle safety considerably.
In terms of efficiency, lithium iron phosphate batteries, like the Blade Battery, are known for their advantages. The BYD Blade Battery, for instance, offers a long life cycle, better thermal stability due to the unique flat rectangular shape which improves cooling efficiency and improved safety compared to other lithium-ion battery chemistries.
As well as improved efficiency and longevity, the Blade Battery offers plenty of real-world benefits. Firstly, thanks to extreme testing, seamless production and design innovation, the Blade Battery will equip all future pure electric models from BYD. This means customers can enjoy vehicles which not only perform economically but offer peace of mind from a safety perspective. Secondly, the improved space utilisation of the Blade Battery enhances energy density and delivers longer ranges. So, drivers can make longer journeys on a single charge.
With EVs, practicality is everything. That’s why BYD’s Blade Battery also charges from 30 percent to 80 percent in an impressively fast 30-minutes using a DC power output of 110kW. Blade Batteries are designed to last for up to thirty-years too and come with an eight year warranty as standard.
As a top-selling EV manufacturer, BYD is committed to offering a sustainable and eco-friendly driving experience. Vehicles with the BYD Blade Battery are efficient, producing zero tailpipe emissions. This contributes to cleaner air quality and a reduced carbon footprint in comparison with traditional combustion engines. The Blade Battery is also cobalt free, which is great for the environment considering cobalt is extremely toxic from the moment it’s extracted. The battery is also designed to last much longer than the eight year manufacturer's warranty period.
Each battery is produced to world-class standards too, with quality control systems allowing for efficient and stable production at every turn. From the high-precision sensors, to controlled temperatures and the implementation of hundreds of robots, BYD’s economical goals can be seen at production.
